Governor Kim Youngrok Criticizes "Refusal to Recognize President Lee" Remark, Says Public Outraged Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, voiced criticism regarding the People Power Party’s street protests.

On September 21, Governor Kim wrote on his Facebook page, “At the People Power Party’s outdoor rally, which was held for the first time in five years and eight months, a statement by a senior party official refusing to recognize President Lee Jaemyung has shocked and angered the public. The people overcame a crisis at the edge of a cliff during a time when the constitutional order was nearly destroyed, and ultimately protected democracy to the end.”

He continued, “A new government was formed through an orderly and democratic presidential election, which has been praised by the international community. Now, with public support for President Lee Jaemyung fluctuating above 60%, it is bewildering to hear claims of election fraud and refusals to recognize the president.”

Governor Kim added, “Such incidents continue to occur because the leadership of the People Power Party has neither condemned nor apologized for Yoon Sukyeol’s acts of insurrection. Apologizing is not about responding to the demands of the ruling party’s leader, but about fulfilling the will of the people. The overwhelming majority of citizens do not applaud opposition parties that claim election fraud.”

He concluded, “For democracy to mature and the nation to progress, there must be a healthy opposition party that breaks with the wrongs of the past.”

Meanwhile, on this day, the People Power Party held a national rally in Daegu to protest what they called oppression of the opposition and dictatorial politics. This marks the first time in five years and eight months that the People Power Party has engaged in street protests, the last being a rally by the Liberty Korea Party in January 2020.
