Hosted by Pohang City and organized by the Pohang Junior Chamber, the event featured a variety of programs including a commemorative tree planting, a walking competition, celebratory performances, and prize drawings, providing an enjoyable experience for citizens.
One citizen met at the event shared, "Walking through the Cheolgil Forest with neighbors on this clear autumn day helped relieve everyday stress and created new memories."
The Cheolgil Forest Square was once a site plagued by unauthorized cultivation and illegal dumping, but through Pohang City's land acquisition, removal of obstacles, and participation in the climate response urban forest project, it has been transformed into a 9,000-square-meter recreational space for citizens.
It is equipped with a circular walking path, water features, over 20,000 trees and flowering plants, a rock garden, and observation decks, allowing visitors to experience the changing seasons within the city.
This new space serves as a key hub in the green network connecting with Yanghaksan Sangsaeng Neighborhood Park, and is expected to enhance citizen convenience and help disperse pedestrian traffic in the city center.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "It was a meaningful time to walk through the Cheolgil Forest with citizens and enjoy the atmosphere of autumn," adding, "I hope the Cheolgil Forest Square will become a central space for citizen-centered relaxation and cultural events in the future."
Starting with the Cheolgil Forest, Pohang City is working to create an urban environment where people can enjoy walking by connecting forest paths and waterways throughout the city, including ecological stream restoration, large-scale urban forests, and the development of private parks.
