On September 20, Judge Lee Hyojae of the Criminal Division 7 of the Changwon District Court announced that Ms. A (47), who was tried for violating the Narcotics Control Act and for causing bodily harm, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years. In addition, Ms. A was ordered to complete 40 hours of drug treatment lectures and pay a forfeiture of 400,000 won.

According to the findings from the investigation and trial, in December of last year, Ms. A received eight pieces of jelly containing cannabis ingredients from an acquaintance. She consumed some herself and stored the rest in her home refrigerator.

Then, in April of this year, while staying with her boyfriend, Mr. B, who is in his 30s, at a hotel in South Gyeongsang Province, Ms. A suddenly put one piece of the jelly into his mouth while he was focused on a phone call. Mr. B, unaware that the jelly contained cannabis, swallowed it and soon after complained of an increased heart rate and dizziness, requiring treatment in the emergency room.

The prosecution took the case seriously, noting that Ms. A had consumed cannabis jelly at least four times herself and had caused another person to ingest it against his will, leading to her indictment.

In its ruling, the court stated, "The defendant's responsibility is not light, as she not only consumed the substance herself but also caused the victim to ingest cannabis without his knowledge, resulting in physical harm." However, the court also explained the sentencing background, stating, "The defendant has admitted to the crime, and the victim does not wish for punishment, among other factors that were considered comprehensively."
