S-1 Releases Results of 'Chuseok Holiday Safety Awareness' Survey
76% of Respondents Plan to Leave Home for Hometown Visits or Overseas Travel During the Holiday
As the longest holiday period on record approaches, concerns about safety across all sectors of society have been found to be greater than during any previous holiday season. The risk factors that people worry about differ depending on whether they are at home, in stores, or at factories.
On September 21, security company S-1 released the results of its 'Safety Awareness' survey conducted ahead of the Chuseok holiday. The survey was carried out over a seven-day period starting from the 5th, targeting customers who use S-1 security systems at stores and factories. A total of 18,661 people responded.
When asked about their main plans for the Chuseok holiday, 76% of respondents said they would leave their homes for activities such as visiting their hometowns, traveling domestically or abroad, or meeting with family and relatives. Specifically, 29% planned to visit their hometowns and pay respects at ancestral graves, 29% planned family or relative gatherings, 13% intended to travel domestically, and 5% planned to travel abroad.
During the holiday period, 67% of respondents said they feel uneasy about leaving their homes. The top concerns were: damage or theft of delivered parcels and food deliveries (37%), break-ins and theft (36%), and safety accidents such as fires or gas leaks (26%). Traditionally, break-ins and burglary have been the biggest worries during holidays, but this year, damage or theft of delivered parcels and food deliveries has emerged as the top concern. This is interpreted as a result of the rise in online shopping and food delivery as new lifestyle trends, which has heightened vigilance against everyday crimes such as parcel theft from doorsteps.
This trend was also evident in the survey on preferred security solutions. When asked what kind of home security solution they would choose, 47% selected a front-door CCTV system capable of monitoring delivered parcels and food deliveries, making it the most preferred option. This was followed by unmanned security systems (19%), disaster and emergency notification systems (14%), and indoor monitoring cameras (13%).
For stores, the main risk factors during the holiday period were identified as unauthorized entry and theft (43%), equipment accidents such as fires or power outages (41%), and theft of delivered or supplied goods (5%). In the past, equipment accidents that could disrupt store operations, such as fires or power outages, were the primary concern. However, this survey found that unauthorized entry and theft are now the biggest sources of anxiety. This is attributed to the rapid increase in unmanned stores and the corresponding rise in theft targeting these businesses.
The most desired security solution for stores was AI CCTV that provides real-time alerts in case of unusual situations (54%), followed by IoT sensor-based equipment inspection systems (18%) and remote monitoring systems for checking CCTV malfunctions (17%).
At factories, the most commonly cited risk factor was equipment accidents such as fires or power outages, chosen by 68% of respondents. While concerns previously centered on the theft of expensive equipment or materials, the main focus has now shifted to safety accidents. This change reflects growing social attention to serious industrial accidents and the concern that fires or power outages during the holiday period could escalate into major incidents due to difficulties in mounting a rapid initial response.
When asked about measures to strengthen factory safety during the holiday, 22% said they would implement systems for remote site inspection and management, while 21% planned to enhance safety equipment by installing additional CCTV cameras. The most preferred security solution was AI CCTV that provides real-time alerts in the event of a fire, selected by 52% of respondents.
A representative from S-1 stated, "To address the sources of anxiety identified in the survey, we will continue to develop and commercialize solutions that can prevent incidents and accidents in advance, thereby contributing to the creation of a safer society."
