Hyundai Motor Company has resumed exports from the United States.
According to industry sources on September 18, the number of vehicles Hyundai Motor Company produced at its Alabama plant (Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, HMMA) and exported to other countries last month was 1,894 units, a 321% increase compared to the previous month’s 450 units.
This marks a recovery of U.S.-origin exports to normal monthly levels, after plunging to just 14 units in May and hitting zero in June. Last year, the average monthly export volume was 1,883 units.
This is because Hyundai Motor Company decided to resume exports to Canada, which had been halted due to the tariff war between the United States and Canada. Since Canada announced in April that it would impose a 25% retaliatory tariff on U.S.-made vehicles, Hyundai Motor Company had suspended shipments from the United States to Canada. However, as there were no signs of the tariff barrier being resolved soon, the company decided to resume exports to optimize inventory.
It is also analyzed that Hyundai Motor Company’s recent strong performance in the Canadian market likely influenced the decision to resume exports. Including Genesis, Hyundai Motor Company’s sales in Canada last month reached 13,611 units, a 20% increase compared to the same period last year. This was the highest August sales figure on record and marked the eleventh consecutive month of record monthly sales.
