Woojin Industrial Systems and KORAIL to Jointly Develop AI-Based Preventive Maintenance System

Woojin Industrial Systems announced on September 16 that it has recently signed an agreement with Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) to jointly develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) system.

The project will target 490 train cars that have been introduced since 2022. The goal is to develop and establish an integrated CBM management system, leveraging Woojin Industrial Systems’ train manufacturing technology and KORAIL’s operational experience. The two companies have agreed to jointly own the intellectual property and other outcomes resulting from their collaborative research.

CBM is a preventive approach that uses sensors and other monitoring systems to assess real-time conditions and determine the optimal timing for maintenance, thereby improving safety and efficiency. The two companies have already been collaborating to establish an AI-based maintenance ecosystem. In addition to further advancing the AI-powered predictive maintenance and lifespan prediction features they have developed, they also plan to develop AI-driven parts and maintenance planning management functions, as well as conduct maintenance research using the system.

Related organizations and companies, including Korea National University of Transportation and Korea CBM, are also expected to participate in this agreement. Kim Junghyun, CEO of Woojin Industrial Systems, stated, "Through this agreement, we expect to apply a truly advanced CBM by utilizing KORAIL’s experience in railcar maintenance and operational data."
