A 21-year-old Marine sergeant was found dead from a gunshot wound at a Marine Corps base on Daecheong Island, Incheon.
According to the military on September 13, a transport sergeant who had been deployed for a coastal reconnaissance operation at the Marine Corps base on Daecheong Island, Ongjin County, Incheon, was discovered in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound to the forehead earlier that morning.
At the time of discovery, the sergeant was in critical condition due to bleeding. While emergency treatment and evacuation were being prepared, he was pronounced dead by a public health doctor at 9:01 a.m.
The Marine Corps estimated the time of the shooting incident to be around 7:03 a.m. It was confirmed that live ammunition was used. The cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
The Marine Corps Command stated, "Military investigative agencies and the police are on their way to conduct a joint on-site inspection to determine the exact cause of the incident."
Recently, there have been a series of fatal firearm incidents in the military. On August 23, a staff sergeant died at an Army frontline guard post (GP), and on September 2, a captain at the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon lost his life with a rifle.
On September 5, Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-baek instructed at a major commanders' meeting, "The lives of service members must be valued," and ordered every effort to prevent such incidents.
