Jeonbuk Province Secures 105.4 Billion Won in National Funding for Next Year’s Disaster Prevention Projects

162% Increase from Last Year
Expansion of Projects Including Disaster-Prone Reservoirs

Jeonbuk Province has secured 105.4 billion won in national funding for disaster prevention projects for next year.

According to the provincial government on September 12, this amount represents 162% of last year's 65.1 billion won, and is being recognized as the result of proactive administration to protect the lives and property of residents.

This year’s disaster prevention projects will target a total of 101 areas, including comprehensive improvement of flood-prone living zones, disaster risk improvement districts, areas at risk of steep slope collapse, and disaster-prone reservoirs.

This includes 22 new areas, 77 ongoing projects, and 2 projects in the final stages. The total project budget, which combines national and local funding, is expected to increase further.

The main allocations of national funding for new projects are: 4.9 billion won for five flood-prone living zone comprehensive improvement areas, 4.4 billion won for six disaster risk improvement districts, 2.8 billion won for seven steep slope collapse risk areas, and 400 million won for four disaster-prone reservoirs. These initiatives will strengthen efforts to protect residents’ lives and property from natural disasters such as heavy rains and typhoons.

In particular, the 'Comprehensive Improvement of Flood-Prone Living Zones' project identifies disaster vulnerabilities such as flooding or collapses at the village level and improves infrastructure such as rivers, sewage systems, and drainage pump stations in an integrated manner. This marks a shift from fragmented disaster prevention projects to region-specific, integrated improvements.

To secure this national funding, the province conducted detailed field surveys, expert consultations, and drone imaging, thoroughly reviewing the feasibility of each project using scientific methods. These efforts received high marks during the central government’s project selection process.

Oh Taekrim, Director of Resident Safety for the province, stated, "Securing 105.4 billion won in national funding, which is 162% of last year's amount, is a major achievement in strengthening disaster prevention capabilities. We will continue to shorten project timelines and focus on securing budgets for both new and ongoing projects, prioritizing the safety of our residents in all administrative efforts."

Meanwhile, the province is actively supporting customized disaster prevention projects tailored to the disaster characteristics, terrain, and geological conditions of each city and county. With this year’s secured budget, Jeonbuk Province plans to systematically manage disaster risks in each region.
