The event was attended by Heo Heemok, Chairman of the Yuhan Foundation, Choi Sanghoo, Chairman of Yuhan Academy, Cho Ukje, CEO of Yuhan Corporation, officials from the North Korean Refugees Foundation, and the scholarship recipients.
In his welcoming remarks, Heo Heemok, Chairman of the Yuhan Foundation, stated, "The Yuhan Foundation's scholarships are a way to put into practice Dr. Ilhan New's belief that 'the profits of a company should be returned to society.' He emphasized, "Just as Dr. New went to the United States at the age of nine, worked and studied in a foreign land, and founded a company on his own, I hope you will also carve out your own paths in life and achieve your goals by developing your abilities in your respective circumstances." He continued, "I hope you will carry the spirit of Dr. New in your hearts and become a great source of hope for your peers living in North Korea in the future."
Established by the late Dr. Ilhan New, founder of Yuhan Corporation, the Yuhan Foundation has carried on his legacy as a pioneering educator. Since its founding in 1970, the foundation has selected university students every year and provided scholarships to a cumulative total of approximately 9,500 students over 55 years. The total amount of scholarships awarded to date has reached 34 billion won.
Since 2017, the Yuhan Foundation has been awarding scholarships to university students born in North Korea to help them build a stable academic foundation. In addition to its existing scholarship programs, the foundation's support for North Korean students further demonstrates the commitment of both the Yuhan Foundation and Dr. Ilhan New to nurturing talented individuals.
