Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced on the 12th that Mayor Kim Donggeun personally visited tenant companies in the local knowledge industry center on the 11th to listen to voices on site and inspect the working environment.

This initiative follows a meeting held in August and is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve business conditions for companies.

The knowledge industry center is a collective building where manufacturing, knowledge industry, and information and communications technology companies, along with support facilities, are housed together. Previously known as an "apartment-style factory," these centers in Uijeongbu-located in Minlak-dong and Gosan-dong-have attracted attention, but have also faced challenges due to industry restrictions and economic downturns.

To address these issues and promote the clustering of specific industries as well as revitalize the local economy, the city expanded the number of eligible business types for tenancy from 97 to 165 by adding 68 new categories in October last year. Notably, the city strategically included six types in the legal, accounting, and tax fields, two types in industrial machinery and equipment rental, and other sectors closely linked to major city initiatives such as the development of the Complex Cultural Convergence District, the relocation of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) Northern Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters, and the redevelopment of returned U.S. military sites, including video and audio recording and distribution, broadcasting, and construction, to maximize synergy effects.

As a result, as of July 2025, the average occupancy rate of local centers increased by 20 percentage points compared to the previous year.

This achievement stands in stark contrast to the nationwide trend of rising vacancy rates, and the city believes that this change will not be a short-term phenomenon but will lead to greater competitiveness in the regional industrial ecosystem.

Although the city has consistently operated business support programs, the proportion of support funds allocated to tenant companies in knowledge industry centers was only 10% in 2023. To address this, the city improved accessibility by publishing a "Business Support Policy Guide" and holding information sessions, resulting in a significant increase in the proportion of support funds for tenant companies to 35% last year.

This year, the city is also promoting various business support programs, including support for companies participating in domestic and international exhibitions, the Technology Doctor program, customized support for the development, production, and marketing of small and medium-sized enterprises, and smart factory establishment and consulting projects.

In particular, the city newly introduced the "Uijeongbu Knowledge Industry Support Program," targeting local companies in the manufacturing, knowledge industry, and information and communications technology sectors. This program supports the acquisition and renewal costs of industrial property rights and certifications for local small and medium-sized enterprises and is expected to enhance the competitiveness of tenant companies in knowledge industry centers.

Uijeongbu City has also worked to improve transportation networks to alleviate inconveniences for employees of tenant companies. The city increased the number of G6000 and G6100 metropolitan buses, introduced the demand-responsive "Ddok Bus," and launched the new "Uijeongbu 01" public bus route to improve accessibility. In addition, by increasing the number of 206-5(B) route buses and shortening intervals between departures, commuting convenience has been enhanced.

To address parking issues, the city is working in cooperation with Uijeongbu Urban Corporation to provide monthly parking permits for nearby public parking lots as a practical solution.

The city continues to pursue communication initiatives to directly hear from businesses and reflect their feedback in policy. On August 12, Mayor Kim Donggeun held a meeting with officials from knowledge industry centers to discuss directions for development and support measures, including the establishment of support centers and infrastructure improvements. The city is currently reviewing the suggestions made at that time in a comprehensive manner.

On the 11th, Mayor Kim also visited Koisys Co., Ltd. (CEO Lim Namhyuk), a tenant company, to inspect the production and development site and listen to their difficulties. Koisys Co., Ltd. is a small but strong company that has been manufacturing electronic component mounting boards in Uijeongbu for over ten years. On this day, Mayor Kim held in-depth discussions with officials about operational challenges and necessary support measures.

The city plans to continue focusing on developing effective, field-oriented support policies to ensure that tenant companies in knowledge industry centers, as well as other local businesses, can achieve stable growth.

Mayor Kim Donggeun stated, "The competitiveness of knowledge industry centers is not simply determined by the number of tenant companies, but is truly realized when administrative support and residential conditions are balanced. We will continue to do our utmost to provide practical support and improve systems in ways that companies can genuinely feel."
