Over 1,000 Relics and Major Tomb Excavation Findings Unveiled
The Buncheong Culture Museum in Goheung County, South Jeolla Province (headed by County Governor Gong Youngmin), announced on the 10th that it successfully held the opening ceremony for the 2025 special exhibition, "Goheung Tombs, Opening the Door to Antiquity," in the museum's first-floor lobby on the 9th.
The event was attended by over 100 people, including Gong Youngmin, Governor of Goheung County, Ryu Jedong, Chairman of the Goheung County Council, heads of local social organizations, and residents, making the occasion even more meaningful.
On the 9th, attendees of the special exhibition are viewing a reproduction of the gilt-bronze crown excavated from the Andong Tomb in Podu-myeon, Goheung. Provided by Goheung County
This exhibition, which runs until December 7, comprehensively highlights new research findings on the Andong Tomb, Yamac Tomb, and other recently excavated sites, and brings together over 1,000 excavated relics in one place.
Through academic research that began with the excavation of the Andong Tomb in Podu-myeon and the Yamac Tomb in Pungyang-myeon in 2006, and has continued with recent excavations in the Bibongsan area, a variety of ornaments, weapons, and pottery have been unearthed. These discoveries demonstrate that Goheung was a central hub for maritime exchange along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula in ancient times, proving its historical significance.
The exhibition focuses on reinterpreting Goheung's ancient culture and regional identity through the space of the "tomb," and introduces the excavation process, artifacts, and tomb structures from multiple perspectives, allowing visitors to easily and interestingly engage with the academic findings.
To enhance visitors' understanding of the exhibition, a "Gilt-Bronze Crown Making" hands-on program is offered, along with four daily guided tours led by professional docents, enabling visitors to gain deeper insights into the context and meaning of ancient culture.
In his welcoming remarks, Governor Gong Youngmin stated, "Tombs are not merely graves, but cultural heritage that contains traces of the lives, worldviews, and exchanges of ancient people. I hope this exhibition will widely promote the historical value of ancient Goheung and serve as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage."
A representative from the Buncheong Culture Museum said, "This will be a meaningful occasion to once again confirm that ancient Goheung was a place where a vibrant maritime network flourished and a brilliant culture blossomed."
