A man who set fire to a multi-family residence in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun District, Seoul, causing 15 casualties, has been indicted and will stand trial while in detention.
The Criminal Division 2 of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Yoo Jeonghyun) announced on the 10th that a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, has been indicted and detained on charges of arson resulting in death and injury of an inhabited building.
Mr. A is accused of setting fire to a cart loaded with waste paper in the parking lot of a villa in Jegi-dong at around 11:52 p.m. on the 12th of last month. The incident resulted in two deaths and 13 injuries. The parking lot and hallways of the building also suffered property damage exceeding 100 million won.
It was confirmed that Mr. A set fire to the cart owned by a resident with whom he had previously had a dispute.
A prosecution official stated, "We will do our utmost to maintain the indictment so that a severe sentence corresponding to the defendant's responsibility can be imposed," and added, "We will respond strictly to violent crimes that threaten the public's safety and will actively provide support to the victims."
