With a series of recent incidents threatening student safety and raising concerns among parents and the local community, the district has announced plans to proactively strengthen the safety network for school routes.
On September 9, the district held an emergency meeting with relevant departments, including the Department of Education and Youth, the Department of Public Safety, and the Department of Autonomous Administration, to discuss plans for inspecting school routes and implementing safety measures. The district also sent official documents to 47 schools in the area, the Seoul Western District Office of Education, and the Seoul Mapo Police Station, requesting the identification of CCTV blind spots and recommendations for new installation sites along school routes and key student pathways. In addition, the district will conduct on-site inspections with schools, the Office of Education, and the police until September 12 to develop specific solutions for eliminating safety blind spots.
Based on the results of this inspection, Mapo District will gradually implement new CCTV installations, replace outdated equipment, improve the safety environment along school routes, and focus on managing areas that are particularly vulnerable at night.
Mayor Park Gangsu stated, "Crimes targeting children can have serious consequences even from a single attempt, so a proactive and urgent response is essential," adding, "Mapo District will do its utmost to create an environment where children can travel to and from school with peace of mind."
