Checking for Illegal Camera Installations
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on September 10 that it will strengthen crime prevention activities against illegal filming to create an environment where public restrooms in the province can be used with peace of mind. This initiative is part of the 8th popularly elected administration's pledge to provide 'Women's Safety and Security (Safe Return Home, Safe Restrooms),' and currently, a total of around 250 citizen monitoring team members are active in each city and county.

From September 9 to October 23, the province will conduct the first joint inspection of approximately 20 public restrooms in four cities and counties: Chuncheon, Pyeongchang, Gangneung, and Hoengseong. The second round of inspections will target the remaining cities and counties.
This inspection has been organized to coincide with the '2025-2026 Visit Gangwon Years.' By proactively checking for illegal filming devices in public restrooms at major tourist destinations during the autumn season, the province aims to enhance the safety of both visitors and residents and raise public awareness about the prevention of sex crimes.
The main inspection items include: ▲ detecting illegal filming equipment and cameras; ▲ checking the placement of illegal filming prevention stickers and the proper operation of emergency bells; and ▲ conducting campaigns to eradicate illegal filming.
This inspection will be carried out jointly by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, local governments, and citizen monitoring teams. In addition, there will be opportunities to review the activities of the citizen monitoring teams and collect suggestions. If illegal cameras are found during the inspection, they will be immediately reported to the police for investigation.
Jung Young-mi, Director of the Welfare and Health Bureau of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "As digital sex crimes have recently emerged as a social issue, residents' anxiety about illegal filming crimes is growing. Through this joint inspection, we will continue to conduct inspections and prevention activities so that both residents and visitors can use public restrooms with peace of mind. We also ask for the active interest and cooperation of all 18 cities and counties."
