Clean Hydrogen Technology Localization Goal... Industry-Academia-Research-Government 'Innovation Alliance' Launched

Plan to Achieve 100% Localization of Clean Hydrogen Production Technology by 2030

A nationwide consultative body has been launched to accelerate self-sufficiency in clean hydrogen production technology, which is drawing attention as a key future energy source for the carbon-neutral era due to its lack of carbon dioxide emissions during production.

Clean Hydrogen Technology Localization Goal... Industry-Academia-Research-Government 'Innovation Alliance' Launched

On September 9, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the launch ceremony for the "Clean Hydrogen R&D Innovation Alliance" at the Korea Institute of Energy Research in Daejeon, officially establishing a cooperative framework for technology localization among industry, academia, research institutes, and government.

The government announced the Hydrogen Future Strategy in 2022 and has been working to localize clean hydrogen production technology. However, the technology remains at a lower level compared to overseas counterparts, and there has been a high dependence on foreign core components and materials. The Clean Hydrogen R&D Innovation Alliance aims to address these issues by bringing together the government, research institutes, and companies to operate a "full-cycle cooperation system" from research and development to industrialization, with the goal of accelerating technological self-sufficiency.

The government has set a goal to invest approximately 124.1 billion won by 2029 to focus on the development of large-scale water electrolysis systems and to achieve 100% localization of clean hydrogen production technology by 2030.

At a meeting held prior to the launch ceremony, researchers and company representatives gathered to share research achievements to date and discuss future strategies.

Jung Taekryeol, Director of Public Convergence Research Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, emphasized, "Clean hydrogen technology must not remain merely as a fundamental technology within the laboratory. The government, research institutes, and companies will unite as one team to narrow the gap with leading countries overseas and achieve the goal of 100% localization of clean hydrogen technology."
