West Sea Coast Guard Agency Launches Special Crackdown on Illegal Ship Modifications and Expansions

The Commissioner of the West Sea Coast Guard Agency will conduct a special crackdown from September 22 to October 19 to prevent maritime accidents caused by illegal ship modifications and expansions. Prior to this, a two-week advance notice period will be implemented until September 21.

According to the West Sea Coast Guard Agency on September 8, the western and southern seas have a high concentration of fishing vessels nationwide, making them regions where illegal modifications and expansions frequently occur. Over the past three years (2022-2024), 298 cases have been detected.

Major violations include 170 cases of failing to undergo temporary inspections after part repairs, and 128 cases of failing to maintain the vessel's condition, such as unauthorized installation of structures.

The crackdown will target changes to hull length and width, changes to the type or output of propulsion systems, modifications to structure and equipment, failure to undergo temporary inspections after repairs, and violations of condition maintenance after inspections. The aim is to prevent capsizing and fire accidents caused by illegal modifications ahead of the busy autumn fishing season.

Local police stations will hold meetings with fishermen to encourage vessel owners to restore their ships to their original condition or undergo vessel inspections voluntarily.

A representative from the West Sea Coast Guard Agency stated, "Illegally modified or expanded vessels pose a significant threat to public life and safety in the event of maritime accidents," adding, "We ask for active cooperation to prevent illegal modification activities and to create a safe fishing environment."
