A Cultural Hub for Both Citizens and Artists in Sangju
Sangju City in North Gyeongsang Province has officially begun construction on its long-anticipated Culture and Arts Center. On September 6, the city held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Sangju Culture and Arts Center at the lawn square of the Sambaek Agricultural and Rural Theme Park, marking the start of a new 100 years of culture in Sangju.
Kang Youngseok, mayor of Sangju (ninth from the left), broke ground with attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Sangju Culture and Arts Center, marking the start of a new 100 years of culture in Sangju.
The event was attended by a large number of distinguished guests, including members of the National Assembly, North Gyeongsang Provincial Council, and Sangju City Council, as well as figures from the cultural and arts community and local citizens. The ceremony featured commemorative speeches, congratulatory remarks, and a celebratory video, followed by performances from the Seongsin Girls' Middle School Orchestra and the Sangju Yeonhuedanmaek troupe, filling the venue with enthusiastic applause.
The Culture and Arts Center will be constructed with one basement level and three above-ground floors, featuring a performance hall with 650 seats and exhibition facilities. A total project budget of 49.5 billion won has been allocated, with completion targeted for November 2027. Once finished, it is expected to become the hub of culture and arts in Sangju and a key space for local residents to enjoy cultural experiences.
Mayor Kang Youngseok of Sangju stated, "The construction of the Culture and Arts Center is the result of the passion and support of Sangju citizens," adding, "It will provide citizens with a richer cultural life and become a groundbreaking turning point for the development of local culture and arts."
The city plans to actively incorporate citizen feedback and operate a variety of programs, including performances, exhibitions, and educational activities. Beyond simply constructing a facility, Sangju aims to develop the center into a comprehensive cultural hub that supports local artists' creative activities, produces cultural content, and fosters talent.
This groundbreaking ceremony was more than just the start of a new building; it was a declaration of a new vision for "Cultural City Sangju." Attention is now focused on whether the Culture and Arts Center will enrich the lives of Sangju citizens and become a core base for enhancing the region's competitiveness.
