Trump to Host Next Year's G20 at Trump Resort... Will Skip This Year's South Africa Summit

The United States, which will serve as the chair of the Group of Twenty (G20) next year, has decided to host the G20 Summit in Miami, Florida.

Trump to Host Next Year's G20 at Trump Resort... Will Skip This Year's South Africa Summit

On September 5 (local time), President Donald Trump announced at the White House, "I am very pleased to announce that the 2026 G20 Summit will be held in Miami, Florida, one of America's greatest cities." He added, "Next year, we will have the honor of hosting the G20 Summit in the United States for the first time in nearly 20 years, while also celebrating the 250th anniversary of America's founding."

The G20 Summit is scheduled to take place at Trump National Doral Miami, a golf resort in Miami owned by President Trump. He described Doral as "ideally located right next to the airport and beautiful, so everyone wants to be there."

Meanwhile, President Trump announced that he will not attend the upcoming G20 Summit to be held in South Africa on November 22-23. Instead, Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States.

This is because, since the inauguration of President Trump's second administration, the United States has maintained a strained relationship with South Africa. From the beginning of his term, President Trump criticized South Africa's "land expropriation law," introduced to address historical inequalities, as discriminatory against white people. He suspended aid to South Africa, claiming that white farmers were being persecuted, and designated the South African ambassador to the United States as persona non grata, expelling him. In May, when South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the White House, President Trump also caused a stir by accusing him of supporting white genocide.

It is also analyzed that South Africa's membership in BRICS-a coalition of non-Western, anti-American emerging economies including Russia and China-was a factor in President Trump's decision.

Previously, on a flight returning from a visit to Scotland in July, President Trump commented on the possibility of attending the South Africa G20 Summit, saying, "I will probably send someone else," and explained, "because we have had many issues with South Africa."
