KORAIL Mobilizes for Chuseok Train Safety... Deploys Emergency Trains and Mobile Maintenance Teams

KORAIL to Inspect 6,000 Rail Vehicles Over One Month
Comprehensive Safety Checks Ahead of Chuseok Mass Transportation
Intensive Maintenance and Emergency Response Plans in Place

Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has begun efforts to ensure the safety of rail vehicles ahead of the mass transportation period for Chuseok. The company will strengthen preemptive inspections to prevent train breakdowns and deploy reserve trains and maintenance personnel at major stations and depots across the country in preparation for any disruptions.

On September 5, KORAIL held a meeting at its Daejeon headquarters, presided over by Acting President Jung Jungrae. Around 30 participants, including officials in charge of vehicles, safety, passenger services, and logistics, as well as representatives from the five national rail vehicle maintenance divisions, gathered to review the safety measures.

First, throughout September, KORAIL will conduct a comprehensive inspection of more than 5,900 rail vehicles. Core components such as running gear, wheels, and axles will be serviced for KTX, regular trains, and electric trains, while convenience facilities like restrooms will also be checked in advance to prevent malfunctions. In addition, electrical and signaling equipment will be re-inspected to prepare for autumn weather conditions, including typhoons and significant temperature fluctuations.

An emergency response plan has also been established. For KTX trains, one reserve train will be stationed each at Osong and Cheongnyangni stations, as well as one at each train depot. At Seoul and Busan stations, five regular trains-including ITX-Ma-eum and ITX-Saemaeul-will be on standby, along with 15 electric trains at 11 train depots nationwide. A total of 146 mobile maintenance personnel will be deployed to 47 stations across the country, including Seoul Station.

Additionally, KORAIL will secure key components in advance and assign emergency staff, maintaining a cooperative system with vehicle manufacturers, partner companies, and other relevant organizations. Executive-level on-site inspections will be strengthened at the five national rail vehicle maintenance divisions and 30 vehicle business offices nationwide.

Acting President Jung Jungrae stated, "We will thoroughly prepare for the mass transportation during the Chuseok holiday by focusing on intensive maintenance of rail vehicles, which are fundamental to train operations, so that everyone can travel safely during the holiday period."
