Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "Two Koreans Dead, One Seriously Injured in Lisbon Tram Derailment"

On September 3 (local time), a tram derailment in Lisbon, Portugal resulted in the deaths of two Korean nationals, while another is reported to be in intensive care.


According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 5, Korean time, it was confirmed that a Korean man and a Korean woman died in the accident in the early morning hours. Another Korean woman sustained serious injuries and is undergoing surgery and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.


An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Our local embassy is closely communicating with Portuguese authorities and providing necessary consular assistance, including support for the injured and contacting the victims' families."


As of now, the accident in Lisbon has claimed a total of 16 lives. The tram, known as the 'Funicular,' is a popular tourist attraction used by more than 3.5 million people annually. The Portuguese government designated September 4, the day after the accident, as a national day of mourning and is currently conducting an investigation and inquiry into the incident.
