The 'Hyundai Translocal Series' is co-organized by the Cheongju Craft Biennale and the Whitworth Art Gallery in the United Kingdom, with the National Crafts Museum of India participating as a collaborating institution.
Based on Korea's craft culture, India's artisan traditions, the United Kingdom's Industrial Revolution, and the historical exchanges among the three cities-Cheongju, New Delhi, and Manchester-the exhibition offers an opportunity to view textiles, which served as a hub for trade across regions and continents, not merely as commodities but as a historical legacy that connects different civilizations.
The exhibition presents more than 30 works, including new pieces by eight teams of artists mainly active in Korea and India under the theme of 'Textile Craft and Community,' along with traditional Korean textile works and traditional Indian textiles from the Whitworth Art Gallery's collection.
Kaimurai "The Answer to All My Prayers Lies in the Questions I Never Asked" (2025), Exhibition View of The eight participating artist teams-Boito, Jang Yeonsoon, Hong Youngin, Kaimurai, Ko Somi, Pero, Sumakshi Singh, and Yoo Jung Hye-explored diverse regional textile techniques, materials, and artisan cultures during research trips to India and Korea in February and April, and created new works based on these experiences.
The Whitworth Art Gallery introduces its collection of Indian textiles, which demonstrate the technical sophistication and layered history of South Asian textile traditions, and illustrates how textile craft can serve as a medium for memory, knowledge, and identity.
A Hyundai Motor Company representative stated, "This exhibition offers a new perspective on the narrative of textile art that connects eras and regions, providing an opportunity to explore the multifaceted meanings of art. By supporting transregional collaboration among domestic and international art institutions, we aim to foster broad communication and understanding of contemporary connectivity through art."
