People Power Party Counters Ethics Complaint Against Na Kyungwon
Calls for Ethics Probe Into Chairwoman Chu Mi-ae
Criticism Over Committee Neutrality and Management
On September 3, Shin Dongwook of the People Power Party stated during a free speech session at an emergency party meeting in front of the party floor leader's office, "The Democratic Party exaggerated and distorted Assemblywoman Na's single comment, which was made in protest of Chairwoman Chu's management of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee."
On September 2, at the plenary meeting of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee held at the National Assembly, Na Kyungwon of the People Power Party and others protested against Chairwoman Chu Mi-ae's way of conducting the meeting and argued with members of the Democratic Party of Korea. 2025.9.2 Photo by Kim Hyunmin
On this day, Democratic Party first-term lawmakers on the committee, including Lee Sungyoon, condemned Na's remarks as disparaging to first-term lawmakers and announced plans to file a complaint with the ethics committee. The previous day, during the committee's plenary session, Na had told first-term lawmakers from the Democratic Party and the Rebuilding Korea Party, "First-term lawmakers should stay quiet." The People Power Party had nominated Na as the party's secretary for the committee, but when Chairwoman Chu did not put the appointment on the agenda, Na made the comment in protest.
Shin added, "It is laughable that Democratic Party members, completely disregarding the National Assembly Act and established practices, rushed out en masse to denounce Assemblywoman Na's remarks," and urged, "If Chairwoman Chu is not afraid of Assemblywoman Na, she should appoint her as secretary."
Cho Baesook, another People Power Party member of the committee, stated, "The Legislation and Judiciary Committee is like the upper house of all standing committees, and the chairperson should run meetings with a neutral attitude that brings together both the ruling and opposition parties." She criticized, "Chairwoman Chu, relying solely on the Democratic Party's majority, has forgotten her duties as committee chair."
She further warned, "In fact, Chairwoman Chu is violating her obligation of neutrality as stipulated by the National Assembly Act as committee chair. We will prepare to file a complaint with the ethics committee against Chairwoman Chu."
