Okcheon Talent House in Sunchang County Selected for Ministry of Education's "Self-Directed Learning Center"

Selected for the "2025 Self-Directed Learning Center" Project
Okcheon Talent House to Receive 270 Million Won Annually for Up to Three Years

Sunchang County in North Jeolla Province announced on September 3 that Okcheon Talent House has been selected as the final recipient for the "2025 Self-Directed Learning Center," a public project by the Ministry of Education.

The "Self-Directed Learning Center" is a new initiative by the Ministry of Education, launched for the first time this year, that provides learning spaces and a variety of educational programs to help middle and high school students study independently without relying on private tutoring.

This selection is the result of a series of meetings held since April between the county, the local education support office, participating organizations, and Okcheon Talent House officials, followed by consulting and on-site inspections by the North Jeolla Provincial Office of Education, which led to Okcheon Talent House being confirmed as the project site.

It is particularly meaningful because the project reflects the active input of the local community, gathered through surveys of local residents, and was prepared in collaboration with the community.

The Self-Directed Learning Center, which will be established within the Jiseong Hall of Okcheon Talent House, is scheduled to begin full-scale operations by the end of this year and will receive annual funding of 270 million won for up to three years.

The main programs include: ▲ providing learning spaces ▲ EBS-linked learning management services ▲ online video tutoring with university students. Starting in 2027, the second floor of the "Sunchang County Language and Career Advancement Center," which is being developed in connection with the operation of an educational advancement special zone pilot area, will also be used as the center.

The county will be responsible for providing educational spaces and managing facilities, while the local education support office will handle program operations and budget support, with both parties working together in cooperation.

County Governor Choi Youngil stated, "By joining forces with the education support office, we have been able to establish a new model for learning support in the region," adding, "The county will do its best to create an environment where students can develop their own learning abilities."
