Expected to Become a Space Where Peace, Remembrance, Nature, and Healing Come Together
Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province, led by Mayor Park Hyungdeok, is launching the creation of 'Soyonaeum Park' as a key project to develop the Soyo Mountain area into a leading tourist and leisure destination in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Soyonaeum Park will cover approximately 270,000 square meters in the Sangbongam-dong San 41 area and will be developed as both a historical park and a forest relaxation space in connection with the Liberty Protection Peace Museum.
The city was selected for the third Gyeonggi Province Regional Balanced Development Project in 2025, securing 7 billion won in provincial funding, and plans to invest a total of 15.7 billion won. Since May of last year, Dongducheon has been working on the park development plan, aiming to complete the implementation plan approval by the first half of 2026, begin construction in the second half of the same year, and complete the project by 2029.
Soyonaeum Park will feature the 'Garden of Remembrance' on the site of the relocated memorial tower, in connection with the memorial monument inside the Liberty Protection Peace Museum, allowing visitors to naturally reflect on remembrance in their daily lives. The park will also include a cafe, waterfront area, lawn plaza, flower gardens, and walking trails, expanding tourism infrastructure where families can stay and enjoy various activities.
This project will be linked not only with existing tourist attractions in the Soyo Mountain area, such as Soyo Mountain Amusement Park, Soyo Byeol & Forest Theme Park, and the Northern Gyeonggi Children's Museum, but also with upcoming facilities like a park golf course, a pet theme park, and a natural-style stream. Through these connections, the project is expected to address current issues such as tourism demand concentrated in specific age groups, short stays, and a lack of tourism content, while also contributing to revitalizing the local economy.
Mayor Park Hyungdeok of Dongducheon City stated, "Soyonaeum Park will be created as a space where peace, remembrance, nature, and healing come together. We will do our utmost to make it a daily sanctuary for citizens and a must-visit destination for tourists, establishing Soyo Mountain as a premier tourist spot in the Seoul metropolitan area."
