Choi Kyojin, Sejong Superintendent, Resigns Elected Post After Nomination as Education Minister

Choi Kyojin, the Superintendent of Education for Sejong City, who has been nominated as the Minister of Education in the Lee Jaemyung administration, will resign from his superintendent post effective September 2.

On August 30, the Sejong City Office of Education announced that it had submitted Choi's resignation letter to the Speaker of the Sejong City Council on the morning of August 29.

Superintendent Choi was first elected as the second popularly elected superintendent in July 2014 and has since served three consecutive terms. This was his final term, and he has been appointed as Minister of Education with about ten months remaining. He prepared for the nation’s first full implementation of the high school credit system, established the Sejong-style educational autonomy model that brings together local communities and schools, and strengthened educational welfare and basic academic responsibility to ensure that no child is left behind in learning or care.

Superintendent Choi stated, "I am deeply sorry to step down without completing the term entrusted to me by the citizens of Sejong. Since taking office, I have dedicated the past 11 years to building new schools and ensuring the happiness of our children. I sincerely thank all the citizens and the entire Sejong education community for their support." He added, "I will faithfully participate in the confirmation hearing and, regardless of my position, devote myself to gathering ideas and wisdom for the future of education in Sejong and for the next generation."

An official from the Office of Education said, "Following Superintendent Choi Kyojin's resignation, the office will ensure that work continues smoothly and in accordance with legal procedures."
