President Lee Emphasizes Need for Practical Solutions
to Prevent Abuse of Power from Concentration of Authority
President Lee Jaemyung has instructed that key issues regarding prosecution reform should be discussed and debated rationally in front of the public, with measures and solutions to be developed through this process. He also stated that he himself may preside over these discussions.
On the 29th, Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the presidential office, announced during a briefing at the Yongsan presidential office that President Lee had issued these instructions. Spokesperson Kang said, “President Lee emphasized the need to devise practical measures to address fundamental problems, such as preventing abuse of power due to concentration of authority and ensuring the smooth operation of investigative powers.”
President Lee particularly reiterated that prosecution reform must not become a mere show. He said, “It must not be for show,” and added, “We need to come up with substantive proposals. If there are differing opinions, we should foster a culture of debate, specifically mentioning which aspects can serve as alternatives and which are lacking, in order to develop a more rational and public-interest-oriented plan for prosecution reform.”
He went on to say, “If there are people with such views, wouldn’t it be best to present alternatives and discuss, in an open forum, the most rational and reasonable ways to achieve prosecution reform?” Regarding President Lee’s remark that he may personally preside over the discussions, spokesperson Kang clarified, “This means he is open to participating in the debate with a fully open attitude.”
Meanwhile, spokesperson Kang stated that the meeting between the ruling and opposition party leaderships to discuss the outcomes of the South Korea-U.S. summit is still under scheduling discussions. She said, “The president proposed this meeting to demonstrate his commitment to unity and to gather diverse opinions from both parties,” and added, “President Lee believes it is highly desirable for the ruling and opposition parties, along with the government, to meet and exchange views, even without setting a specific agenda.”
Regarding People Power Party leader Jang Donghyeok’s request for an additional one-on-one meeting with President Lee, spokesperson Kang said, “We have officially proposed a meeting with Representative Jang and have also communicated unofficially,” adding, “Discussions are underway regarding the coordination of the agenda and other details.”
