Vibrio vulnificus Detected in Ulsan Seawater
Authorities Urge Caution When Consuming Seafood and Emphasize Adherence to Prevention Guidelines

As the first case of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria has been detected in the seawater of the Ulsan region this year, caution is advised regarding the consumption of seafood and contact with seawater.

The Ulsan Institute of Health and Environment Research announced that Vibrio vulnificus bacteria were confirmed in seawater samples collected from Jinha Beach on the 21st.

The institute conducts surveillance of pathogenic Vibrio bacteria in coastal seawater every year from April to November. In 2023, three cases of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria were also detected.

Vibrio vulnificus bacteria proliferate actively from May to October, when the water temperature rises above 18 degrees Celsius. Infection can occur when consuming raw or undercooked contaminated seafood, or when wounded skin comes into contact with seawater.

Symptoms of infection include acute fever, chills, low blood pressure, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition, skin lesions such as rashes, swelling, and blisters may develop on the legs within 24 hours of symptom onset. If these symptoms appear, it is important to visit a hospital immediately for appropriate treatment.

If the infection progresses to sepsis, it is a disease with a high fatality rate of around 50 percent. Special caution is required for high-risk groups, including people with chronic liver disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.

To prevent infection, it is important to: ▲ wash hands properly ▲ thoroughly cook seafood before eating ▲ avoid contact between wounds and seawater ▲ disinfect cutting boards and knives after preparing seafood ▲ store seafood at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius and heat to above 85 degrees Celsius, and follow all hygiene guidelines.

An official from the institute stated, "As concerns about Vibrio vulnificus infection increase, we have notified districts and relevant departments of the test results, and requested strengthened inspections of nearby raw fish restaurants and enhanced seafood safety management." The official also urged, "We ask all citizens to follow the prevention guidelines."
