Yoo Simun, a member of the Guregun Council in South Jeolla Province, sponsored a resolution titled ‘Resolution for the Establishment of the Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office and Its Location in Guregun’ at the first plenary session of the 322nd regular meeting held on August 28.

Through the resolution, Council Member Yoo called for the prompt establishment of the Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office to create a systematic and professional management system for the Seomjingang River basin, as well as for the office to be located in Guregun.

Council Member Yoo Simun: "Establishment of Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office... Attracting It to Guregun" Yoo Simun, Guregun Council Member.

Currently, the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office is responsible for managing the Seomjingang River, the Yeongsangang River, and even the rivers in Jeju Island, making it difficult to provide specialized management. At this point, comprehensive and systematic management-such as the preservation of the Seomjingang River ecosystem, environmental management, and dam operations-is urgently needed, and the establishment of a dedicated agency to oversee these tasks has become a pressing issue.

If the Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office is established in the future, Guregun, which is directly affected by the four major dams of the Seomjingang River, is geographically the optimal location. As an ecological and environmental city embracing both Jirisan Mountain and the Seomjingang River, Guregun is expected to make significant contributions to watershed management and balanced national development.

Council Member Yoo emphasized, “The establishment of the Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office is an essential task to respond to the climate crisis and the first step toward preserving the Seomjingang River ecosystem. I will do my utmost, together with the residents of Guregun, to ensure that the Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office is located in Guregun, which is the optimal site for managing the Seomjingang River basin.”
