Three-Day Event at POSCO International Hall
Global Steel Industry Leaders Discuss Technology, Policy, and Finance for Net-Zero Transition
Pohang Emerges as a Leading City of Green Innovation, Opening a Carbon-Neutral Future Beyond Steel
On August 28, the Pohang City Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center (POEX), hosted the "Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-carbon Steel" at the POSCO International Hall.

This workshop, held over three days from August 27 to 29, brings together more than 100 participants from 35 countries, including government officials, representatives from international organizations, and stakeholders from the global steel industry. The attendees are discussing strategies for reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to sustainable industries.
UNIDO, a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes major international cooperation initiatives such as the "Global Matchmaking Platform of the Climate Club" and the "Net Zero Partnership for Industrial Decarbonization," added weight to the discussions by engaging with global steel companies such as the World Steel Association, AGORA Industry, Vale, and POSCO during this event.
The Global Matchmaking Platform of the Climate Club is an international cooperation platform that connects investment and technology supply and demand for industrial decarbonization, as part of the "Climate Club," a coalition of major countries.
The Net Zero Partnership for Industrial Decarbonization is a global initiative led by UNIDO. It is a policy, technology, and financial cooperation partnership designed to accelerate the net-zero transition of energy-intensive industries such as steel and cement.
In her welcoming remarks, Rana Ghoneim, Director of the Department of Energy at UNIDO, emphasized that achieving net-zero in the steel industry is a shared challenge for humanity. She particularly stressed the urgent need for ongoing international support and cooperation to ensure that emerging and developing countries are not left behind in the transition process.
On the first day of the workshop, in-depth discussions were held on three main topics: the necessity of decarbonizing the steel sector and trends in innovative technologies and policies; an analysis of the current state of the steel industry and policy challenges by region; and the feasibility of policy tools for decarbonization, such as carbon pricing and green bonds.
Mayor Lee Gangdeok stated, "Pohang is transforming from a steel city into a leading city of advanced green innovation. We deeply recognize the urgency of decarbonizing the steel industry, and through this workshop, we aim to maximize the synergy of technological innovation, policy cooperation, and international partnerships."

On the final day of the event, participants will discuss the importance of financing and financial innovation for decarbonization.
Global steel industry leaders, including POSCO, will share concrete strategies and successful case studies for achieving carbon neutrality. The event will conclude with government, industry, and international organizations seeking avenues for cooperation and discussing actionable plans.
The Pohang City Government expects this workshop to serve as a turning point in leading the green transition of the steel industry and to further strengthen the foundation for international cooperation in global decarbonization.
