Gwangju to Conduct Drone-Assisted Crackdown on Environmental Pollution Throughout September

Intensive Management of Odors and Illegal Waste
Zero-Tolerance Policy for Serious Violations

The city of Gwangju will conduct a "Special Joint Crackdown on Environmental Pollution" throughout September, when large-scale events such as the World Archery Championships and the Gwangju Design Biennale will be held.

This crackdown aims to support the successful hosting of international events like the World Archery Championships and the Design Biennale, and to prevent harm to residents caused by foul odors, illegal waste disposal, and unauthorized discharge of water pollutants. The crackdown will take place from September 1 to 30, targeting business sites with frequent complaints, including those located in 11 industrial complexes.

The city plans to use drones to extensively inspect business sites and factories that are difficult to access, focusing on the following: installation and operation of unlicensed (unreported) emission facilities, proper operation of emission and prevention facilities, illegal dumping of waste, and compliance with environmental laws.

In particular, for serious violations, the Gwangju City Department of Social Disasters will directly investigate and refer cases to the prosecution, applying a zero-tolerance policy to reinforce legal order and raise awareness.

For small businesses, the city will cooperate with the Gwangju Green Environment Support Center to provide facility and process assessments and technical support, helping them voluntarily establish their own environmental management systems.

Kim Junyoung, Director of the Citizens' Safety Office, stated, "Environmental pollution is an act that threatens the health of our citizens," and added, "Through this special crackdown, we will encourage businesses to recognize the importance of environmental management and actively participate in preventing environmental pollution incidents."
