the First Female Master Singer of Joseon
A Memorial Ceremony Honoring Her Legacy and Pioneering Spirit
Gochang County in North Jeolla Province will hold the "5th Jinchaseon Day Ceremony" on September 1 at the birthplace of the renowned singer in Simwon-myeon, Gochang County.
According to the county on August 27, this ceremony honors Jinchaseon, the first female master singer of pansori in the Joseon Dynasty, who defied her fate and dreamed of singing at a time when women were forbidden from performing pansori.
The event is hosted by Gochang County and jointly organized by the Jinchaseon Memorial Project Association (Chairman Ra Namgeun) and the Jinchaseon Promotion Association (Chairwoman Choi Hyejin), serving as a time to honor and remember the master singer.
Jinchaseon was the real-life figure depicted in the 2015 film "The Sound of a Flower," which attracted significant attention from fans. In the film, the role of Jinchaseon was played by singer and actress Suzy, a former idol, alongside actor Ryu Seungryong.
The ceremony will begin with a pre-event performance at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., and a second part of the event.
Ra Namgeun, Chairman of the Jinchaseon Memorial Project Association, said, "At a time when pansori was exclusively for men, Jinchaseon rose to become the first female master singer and a national master singer of Joseon, as well as a local artist. We invite many pansori performers and local residents to join us in honoring and remembering her."
