Climbing Hallasan, Leaving Conscience Behind?... Piles of Trash Found Under Wooden Deck

A Deck Full of Trash Left by Visitors for 19 Years
Deck Maintenance and Trash Removal to Continue Through Late October

During the process of replacing the wooden deck at the summit of Hallasan in Jeju, a large amount of trash left behind by previous visitors was uncovered.

According to the Hallasan National Park Office on August 22, workers began dismantling the old deck on the east ridge of Baengnokdam at the summit of Hallasan on August 21. As a result, various types of trash such as plastic bottles, snack wrappers, plastic bags, and heat packs, which had been discarded in the gaps, were discovered.

This deck was originally installed in 2006 for the convenience of visitors, who often take breaks here to enjoy snacks or drinks. Although partial repairs have been made over the years, this is the first time in 19 years that the deck is being completely replaced.

The park office has repeatedly asked visitors to take their trash with them, but some have irresponsibly thrown garbage between the deck planks, leading to a buildup of waste over many years. The issue of trash at the summit of Hallasan is already well known. In November last year, the Hallasan National Park Office mobilized about 20 staff members and collected a total of 1.5 tons of trash.

The park office plans to divide the total 572 square meters of deck into three sections and carry out maintenance work, including trash collection, through the end of October. An official from the park office stated, "Since we only worked for one day yesterday, we have not yet determined the exact amount of trash collected," and added, "The trash will be transported down the mountain by helicopter contracted for the maintenance project."
