Gwangyang Steelworks has been actively working to address the growing issue of isolation among elderly people living alone in today's aging society and to help make Gwangyang a better city to live in. To this end, it launched the "Heart Connection for Elderly Living Alone" project, which has been operated annually.
The Heart Connection project for elderly living alone is a collaborative initiative involving the Heart Connection Flower Arrangement Volunteer Group at Gwangyang Steelworks, Gwangyang City, and local social welfare organizations. The project offers a variety of programs to enhance seniors' happiness, including home visits to check on their wellbeing, cultural experiences, delivery of daily necessities, birthday celebrations, and outdoor excursions.
At this ceremony, Gwangyang Steelworks donated a total of 40 million won, utilizing designated contributions from the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, which is funded by 1% of the monthly salaries voluntarily donated by POSCO Group and partner company employees.
To date, 7,225 volunteers have participated in the Heart Connection program, carrying out volunteer activities for 7,081 seniors. In this year's project, which will run until July next year, the program aims to be a reliable companion to approximately 2,000 elderly people living alone.
In particular, this year, the program drew attention for its hands-on initiatives that provide practical support to seniors, such as summer health food assistance, kimchi provision, and housing maintenance services.
Jongil Park, Deputy Head of Gwangyang Steelworks, stated, "This project aims to provide emotional healing and improve quality of life by deeply engaging with seniors through various therapeutic programs. We will continue to work closely with Gwangyang City, which pursues comprehensive welfare, to make our city an even better place to live."
