Chungnam Province Opens Era of Autonomous Vehicle Patrols

Chungnam Province will be the first in the nation to introduce illegal parking enforcement and crime prevention patrol services using autonomous vehicles.

On August 24, the provincial government announced that it will conduct a four-month pilot operation of autonomous vehicles in the Naepo New Town area from August 25 until December.

This project goes beyond simple demonstrations and marks the first case of integrating autonomous driving technology into public administration. The Chungnam Innovation City Management Headquarters will be responsible for its operation.

Previously, the province had carried out a parking guidance project using autonomous vehicles last year. This year, it has equipped the vehicles with actual enforcement devices, establishing a full-scale enforcement system.

The enforcement system automatically recognizes illegally parked vehicles, and the relevant information is transmitted to the local government’s enforcement network, leading to administrative actions such as fines.

The service will operate on weekdays, with parking enforcement taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and crime prevention patrols running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In particular, the crime prevention patrols will focus on residential areas with low foot traffic and are expected to contribute to crime prevention and enhanced urban safety.

Through this pilot project, the province plans to verify an unmanned enforcement and patrol model based on autonomous vehicles and expand the initiative with national funding support.

A provincial official stated, "We will continue to advance autonomous driving services in stages to build a smart and safe Chungnam that residents can truly experience."
