Kim Moonsoo and Jang Donghyuk Advance to Runoff
Final Party Leader to Be Confirmed on the 26th
Kim Moonsoo, former Minister of Employment and Labor, and Assemblyman Jang Donghyuk (listed in alphabetical order), who advanced to the runoff in the People Power Party's new party leader election, each highlighted their "ability to confront the ruling party" as their competitive edge.
On the afternoon of August 22, at the 6th National Convention of the People Power Party held at Osco in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, former Minister Kim expressed his thoughts on advancing to the runoff, stating, "I will take the lead in firmly defending liberal democracy, which is now in crisis."
Former Minister Kim said, "The Lee Jaemyung administration has stormed the party headquarters twice in an attempt to seize the party membership list and is now trying to dissolve the People Power Party," adding, "In these grave times, we must unite to protect our party."
Former Minister Kim emphasized party unity. He declared, "Throughout the convention, I, Kim Moonsoo, have called for solidarity," and urged, "Let all 107 lawmakers and 5 million party members join forces to bring down the Lee Jaemyung dictatorial administration."
He also pledged to make the People Power Party a strong, combative party. Former Minister Kim appealed for support, saying, "The party leader who will fight and win, the party leader who will protect our members, and the party leader who will defeat the Lee Jaemyung dictatorship is Kim Moonsoo."
Assemblyman Jang advocated for "new methods of struggle." He remarked, "The very fact that I am standing on the runoff stage is a miracle," and assessed, "It is not the result of an old organization, but a miracle created by the passionate hearts of party members coming together."
Assemblyman Jang stated, "The choice remains between old methods of struggle or new ones, the past or the future, stability or innovation, whether the party will continue with division or unite by addressing internal dissent. Choosing Jang Donghyuk is choosing innovation and the future for the People Power Party," he said.
At the convention, since no candidate secured a majority, the top two candidates will face off again in the runoff. The rankings and vote percentages of the candidates were not disclosed. Accordingly, after a TV debate on the 23rd, the runoff vote will be held from the 24th to the 25th, and the final party leader will be confirmed at the main auditorium of the National Assembly Library on the 26th.
