On August 18 (local time), the UK’s Daily Mail quoted Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an internal medicine specialist from Harvard University, who described what changes can occur in the body after quitting sugar for two weeks.

According to Dr. Sethi, even just two weeks without sugar can trigger noticeable changes. He explained, "The first thing you'll see is reduced puffiness around the eyes, decreased liver fat, and a reduction in belly fat." He added, "A rounder face shape caused by sugar intake will also return to a more natural appearance." Dr. Sethi further noted, "Acne and red spots will disappear, making the skin look noticeably clearer." He also claimed that stopping sugar intake helps restore healthy gut microbiota, leading to overall improvements in health.

Previously, Dr. Samantha Coogan from the University of Nevada expressed a similar view. She said, "Once you get past the initial withdrawal symptoms, you’ll experience increased focus and energy, along with positive effects on sleep quality and weight management." She added, "Quitting sugar can improve the condition of your hair, skin, and nails, as well as enhance sleep quality and promote weight loss." Dr. Coogan emphasized, "Sugar is essentially an addictive substance," and stressed the need for a gradual reduction, similar to drug detoxification.

Cutting Back on Sugar: Small Steps in Daily Life

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing daily sugar intake to less than 10% of total energy intake, ideally below 5% (about 25g). However, just two cans of soda can easily exceed this recommended amount.

Experts advise starting with small habits to reduce sugar intake. Common strategies include: taking short walks, chewing cinnamon gum, drinking tart juices, using spices when cooking, staying well hydrated, brushing your teeth, and rewarding yourself with alternatives to food. However, they warn that quitting sugar abruptly can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and feelings of depression, so it is important to gradually cut back on processed foods and beverages.
