The 'History Street Project' in Guri City aims to create a pleasant, walkable road with a historical theme around Donggureung, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a representative relic of the Joseon Dynasty. Through this project, the city seeks not only to enhance citizen convenience but also to install public facilities that reflect the historical significance and design of Donggureung, ultimately establishing a history street that represents not only Guri City but also the nation as a whole.
The first section, where construction will begin, stretches 330 meters in both directions from Donggureung Station to Dongchanggyo Bridge. With the opening of Line 8's Donggureung Station, the area has seen an increase in visitors to Donggureung and a rise in foot traffic. At the same time, there have been numerous requests from residents to replace the aging concrete in this area.
The city plans to reflect the needs of local residents while also creating a history-themed street befitting Donggureung, a major cultural heritage site of the Joseon Dynasty. To this end, the paved sidewalks will be replaced with granite flagstones designed to resemble the Chamdo-the ceremonial path from the red gate (Hongsalmun) to the Jeongjagak pavilion in front of the royal tombs. Pine trees will be planted as street trees to enhance the cityscape. Meanwhile, of the total project cost of 1.65 billion won, the city has secured a special grant tax of 700 million won, significantly alleviating the financial burden.
Baek Kyunghyeon, Mayor of Guri City, stated, "Through this project, we plan to renovate the aging sidewalks of Donggureung-ro in a manner befitting the prestige of Donggureung, making it a history street representative of Korea. This will help promote Donggureung, Guri City's signature cultural heritage, improve the cityscape, and contribute to the prevention of safety accidents for citizens."
