Putin Highlights Russia's "Nuclear Shield"
Stresses National Security Role and Hints at International Cooperation
Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that his country's nuclear technology is a core element of national security, while also indicating a policy of international cooperation.
According to Russia's state news agency TASS, President Putin made these remarks in a speech distributed on August 20 (local time) to mark the 80th anniversary of Russia's nuclear industry. He described the nuclear industry as a prime example of Russia's technological prowess.
President Putin stated, "We have every reason to be proud of the outstanding pioneers of our nuclear project, as well as the talented scientists and experts across many generations."
He added, "Thanks to their expertise and dedicated efforts, hundreds of new companies, research institutes, and design departments have been established over the years. As a result, a unified scientific and industrial complex has been formed, and a reliable 'nuclear shield' has been created for our homeland."
Russia considers August 20, 1945-the date when the Soviet Union, its predecessor, established a special committee to develop nuclear weapons-as the birth of its nuclear industry, commemorating this day every year.
President Putin evaluated, "The establishment of the nuclear industry in 1945 was a significant and truly groundbreaking event in our country's history. It was a triumph of scientific and technological progress that defined the development of our economy, energy sector, healthcare, and defense industry. It contributed to establishing national security and achieving a strategically equal status."
In his speech, President Putin also outlined plans for Russian nuclear scientists to engage in international cooperation. Addressing scientists and workers at the state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom and others, he said, "I believe you will continue to move forward, expand both fundamental and applied research, and follow the path of strengthening international cooperation."
However, the speech did not specify in detail which fields or in what manner Russia's international cooperation in nuclear technology would continue.
