The cleanliness of a pension in Jeju Island has sparked outrage among netizens after being shared on an online community. Photos released by a customer, who paid 240,000 won per night, revealed poor hygiene conditions such as mold, an outdoor washing machine, and a broken kitchen knife, as well as a generally low level of service.
On August 20, a post titled "Take a look at the class of a 240,000 won per night accommodation in Jeju Island" appeared on an online community, accompanied by photos. The post included images of mold on the front door, dust piled up on the window frame, a used bar of soap left in the bathroom, and kitchen utensils in questionable sanitary condition.
The author wrote, "As soon as I entered the accommodation, the smell of mold was overwhelming. Cigarette butts were piled up in the outdoor area, and since there was no washing machine inside, I had to do laundry outside. There were not even tongs or scissors in the kitchen, and when I asked the owner, I was told, 'We don't have scissors.'"

The author continued, "The frying pan had lost all its coating, the kitchen knife was broken, and the cutting board was covered in knife marks. When I confronted the owner about false advertising, he angrily replied, 'What exactly is false advertising?'"
The author eventually decided to eat out and tried to think of it as just bad luck. The next day, when checking out, the owner was waiting and said, "I feel wronged." When the author pointed out the flower pot filled with cigarette butts, the owner responded, "I left it there for guests to smoke. If you don't smoke, just ignore it and walk past."
Owner: "Sorry for poor cleanliness...I will make a complete improvement"
As the post spread, the owner ultimately issued a public apology and expressed determination to make a complete improvement.
That afternoon, the author, who identified themselves as the pension owner, wrote, "Reading the comments made me think a lot. During my first call with the guest, the issue raised was not the condition of the facilities but the lack of kitchen utensils, so I failed to recognize what I had done wrong. Having done this work for a long time, I think I lost awareness of problems with the facilities," the owner apologized.
The owner added, "I am sorry and will reflect on not maintaining cleanliness properly. In addition, I will pay more attention to cleaning window frames and other areas I may have overlooked, and manage them more thoroughly."
