The performance, held on August 14, artistically expressed the fervent longing for independence during the Japanese colonial period, as well as the hope for reunification of the divided Korean people after Liberation. More than 1,100 citizens filled the seats, and the event was made even more meaningful by the participation of over 70 members from the Liberation Association and veterans' organizations, who attended in connection with the Changwon Grand Bell Ringing Ceremony for Liberation Day.
The concert opened with the City Dance Troupe's traditional dance "Gwangdaemu (Byeoksaryu)," followed by a powerful proclamation of the joy of Liberation through the "Triumphal March" from Verdi's opera Aida, performed by the City Symphony Orchestra and Choir.
Next, Kim Hyokyung, a poet and poetry reciter from Changwon, recited her original poem "Like That Day in August," and the City Boys and Girls Choir presented a bright and cheerful stage with "Highlights of Beloved Korean Cartoon Theme Songs."
In the middle of the program, leading Korean vocalists took the stage. Tenor Kim Hyojong delivered a deeply moving performance with "Ave Maria" and "You Are My Everything," while soprano Kang Hyejung received enthusiastic applause for "In the Cloud of Flowers" and "I Want to Live in a Dream" from the opera Romeo and Juliet. The two singers then led the concert to its climax with a duet of "O Soave Fanciulla" from the opera La Boh?me.
The finale featured the City Symphony Orchestra and Choir performing Tchaikovsky's overture "1812." The majestic music and choral harmonies filled the Grand Theater with the joy of Liberation and hope for the future.
Jang Geumyong, Acting Mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, "I hope this performance, prepared to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Liberation, was a meaningful time for our citizens and members of veterans' organizations. We will continue to present stages that remember the past and share hope for the future through the arts."
