Hwaseong City announced on August 14 that it has officially launched the "National Palace Museum Branch Attraction Committee," with participation from local political, religious, academic, and media sectors. The committee is composed of a total of eight members, including two ex officio members and six appointees representing the National Assembly, religious circles, academia, and the media.
While the National Heritage Administration is moving forward with plans to establish a branch of the National Palace Museum, Hwaseong City is considering a site within the Taean 3 District as a candidate location for the branch. The city believes it has advantages not only due to its proximity to various historical and cultural assets such as Yunggeolleung, Yongjusa Temple, and Mannyeonje, but also because of favorable site conditions, including convenient transportation access.
The city expects that attracting the National Palace Museum branch will have multiple benefits, such as creating a space for royal culture exhibitions and experiences, developing the Yunggeolleung Cultural Tourism District, and revitalizing the local economy.
Jung Myunggeun, Mayor of Hwaseong, stated, "Hwaseong is a historical and cultural city embodying King Jeongjo's spirit of filial piety, making it the ideal location for a branch of the National Palace Museum. Together with the committee, we will do everything possible to secure the branch and establish Hwaseong as the cultural hub of southern Gyeonggi Province."
