On August 15, Yonhap News reported that a wedding hall company in Bucheon spent over 300 million won last month to remodel one of its wedding halls. However, some engaged couples who had contracts for the venue are protesting, claiming they were not informed of the remodeling in advance.
The original wedding hall featured an overall white theme, with artificial flowers arranged along both sides of the aisle and around the officiant’s podium, creating a church-like atmosphere. After the remodeling, however, the company installed 3-4 meter tall artificial trees along both side walls of the hall, emphasizing a more nature-friendly ambiance.
A bride-to-be in her 20s, who was scheduled to get married at the venue this November, told Yonhap News, “I signed the contract last year because I liked the clean, church-like atmosphere of the wedding hall, but I was never informed about the remodeling. I was very surprised when I received a text message from the company about the changes on August 3, after the construction was already finished.” She continued, “A wedding is one of the most important moments in life, so not notifying clients in advance is clearly the company’s fault. The company should restore the wedding hall to its original state.”
A groom-to-be in his 30s said, “Since my wedding is at the end of this month and I’ve already sent out all the invitations, I have no choice but to proceed with the ceremony here. However, I will hold the company accountable after the wedding.” It has been reported that out of the hundreds of couples who have contracts for the wedding hall through next year, about 20 couples have raised objections to the remodeling being carried out without prior notice.
The company apologized for changing the interior of the wedding hall without prior notice, but explained that there is no contractual issue. The contract explicitly states that “the interior decorations, facilities, lighting, and design of the wedding hall may be changed, and objections cannot be raised if changes are made to improve the wedding environment.” The company also stated that some engaged couples had signed contracts after seeing the remodeled hall, so restoring it to its previous state is not an option.
A company representative said, “We apologize for not informing customers in advance, but since there is no contractual issue, restoring the hall to its previous state is not feasible. Most customers visited the hall in person and did not raise further concerns, and we will communicate with the couples who have expressed dissatisfaction to find a solution.”
