A man in his 30s has been arrested by police after setting fire to a multi-family residence in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, resulting in 15 casualties.
The Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station announced on the 15th that they had arrested a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on arson charges at around 5:58 p.m. on the 14th in front of a commercial building in Seongdong-gu, and are currently investigating him.
According to police, Mr. A set fire to the parking lot of a four-story multi-family residence in Jegi-dong at 11:52 p.m. on the 12th. The fire reportedly began in a cart loaded with waste paper. The flames spread rapidly in the parking lot, which features a piloti structure (an open space supported only by columns without walls), resulting in the death of a man in his 70s and injuries to 14 others.
The police plan to request an arrest warrant for Mr. A as soon as the investigation is completed.
