Japanese Government "Hopes President Lee’s Visit Will Lead to Stable Korea-Japan Relations" Yonhap News

The Japanese government announced on August 15 that it hopes President Lee Jaemyung’s upcoming visit to Japan on August 23-24 will contribute to the stable development of Korea-Japan relations.

Hayashi Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary and spokesperson for the Japanese government, stated at a regular press briefing that morning, “Korea and Japan are important neighboring countries that must cooperate as partners on a variety of issues facing the international community. In the current strategic environment, Korea-Japan relations and trilateral cooperation among Korea, the United States, and Japan have become even more important.” He added, “The two governments have agreed to maintain close communication, including through shuttle diplomacy.”

President Lee is scheduled to visit Japan ahead of his trip to the United States on August 24, where he will hold a Korea-Japan summit with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru. The two leaders previously held their first summit on June 17 during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada.
