In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, Mokpo City in South Jeolla Province has displayed a large Taegeukgi flag (8.5 meters wide and 5.5 meters tall) on the exterior wall of Building 2 of the Modern History Museum. This initiative aims to commemorate the historical significance of liberation and to encourage both citizens and visitors to share in the spirit of patriotism.
In particular, by displaying the Taegeukgi on the exterior of Building 2-which was formerly the Mokpo branch of the Oriental Development Company-the city has added symbolic meaning to the restoration of national sovereignty and the 80th anniversary of liberation.
The Taegeukgi will be exhibited throughout August, including on Liberation Day, allowing visitors to the Modern History Museum to take commemorative photos in front of the large flag and experience the joy and meaning of liberation.
The Mokpo Modern History Museum (Buildings 1 and 2) has continued to see a steady increase in visitors each year, with attendance surpassing 250,000 in 2024 alone. At Building 1, which was formerly the Japanese Consulate in Mokpo, a popular program allows participants to wear period school uniforms and hats and directly experience the March 1st Independence Movement. Meanwhile, Building 2 offers ongoing exhibitions and hands-on programs introducing the history and functions of the Mokpo branch of the Oriental Development Company.
Additionally, from August 12 to October 12, the Cultural Heritage Administration will host a special exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of liberation, titled "Anti-Japanese Heritage Embracing the Light," where visitors can view actual video exhibits of anti-Japanese independence cultural heritage.
A city official stated, "By displaying the Taegeukgi at the Modern History Museum in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of liberation, we hope this will be an opportunity for everyone to feel pride and confidence as citizens and to reflect together on the meaning of Liberation Day."
