Suncheon City, located in South Jeolla Province, announced on August 14 that it will present a unique cultural project at the Seomun Information Center Exhibition Hall on Culture Street from August 18 to 29. Through the "Senior Memory Art Archive Exhibition: The Happiest Day of My Life," the city will reinterpret the cherished memories of local seniors in a contemporary way.
This exhibition is an innovative cultural project that tells the stories of 12 local seniors through webtoons. It artistically expresses the history and sentiment of Suncheon, drawing attention as a meaningful exhibition that bridges generations.
Students from the Department of Comics and Animation at Suncheon National University engaged in in-depth conversations with seniors from the Hyangdong area, creating webtoons based on each individual's most special moments. Each participating student produced two webtoon pieces inspired by the stories they heard from the seniors.
The exhibited works go beyond simple documentation to offer emotional artistic expressions, covering a variety of themes such as memories with family, hardships in life, and disappearing landscapes. For seniors who are less familiar with digital media, the exhibition provides an opportunity for new cultural experiences, while for young artists, it serves as a source of creative inspiration. The project is recognized for digitally preserving the community's collective memory and presenting a new model for intergenerational communication.
A city official stated, "By using webtoons as a medium, this project facilitates communication between generations. While the memories are personal, they are reinterpreted and expressed as part of the region's history and sentiment, serving as a modern model for the transmission of local culture. We encourage active interest and participation from citizens."
