Ahn Hyeongjun, who was appointed as the new Commissioner of Statistics Korea by President Lee Jaemyung on August 13, is a planning-oriented official who has held key positions within Statistics Korea. This marks the first time since the establishment of Statistics Korea in December 1990 that someone promoted from within the organization has become its commissioner.
Commissioner Ahn, who entered public service after passing the 40th Higher Civil Service Examination, directly produced and managed major statistics while serving as Director of Price Trends and Director of Statistical Policy at Statistics Korea. After being promoted to Senior Executive Service in 2017, he held several key posts, including Director General for Economic Statistics, Director General for Economic Trend Statistics, and Director General for Statistical Policy.
In 2023, he was appointed as the head of the Gyeongin Regional Statistics Office, where he oversaw regional statistical operations. In January of last year, he became the head of the Statistical Training Institute, and in August, he was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Statistics Korea.
He is credited with contributing to the establishment of national data governance, including building the Statistical Data Center and revising the Statistics Act to facilitate the use of statistics by policy ministries.
He has earned the strong trust of employees, having been repeatedly selected in union surveys as a manager people want to work with.
