Gwangju City has taken steps to enhance the safety and convenience of Urban Railway Line 2. On August 12, the city announced that it would issue a legislative notice for the "Amendment to the Urban Railway Construction Standards Rules," prioritizing the convenience and safety of transportation-vulnerable individuals, until August 22.

The amendment is a proactive measure aimed at overcoming the limitations of existing urban railway regulations and has significantly improved mobility rights for people with disabilities and others with limited mobility. In particular, the width of evacuation routes has been expanded from the previous 750mm to 990mm, dramatically improving wheelchair accessibility.

Key improvements include narrowing the gap between train cars and evacuation routes from the previous 225?300mm to 105mm, greatly reducing the risk of safety accidents. This measure is expected to address risks such as passengers’ feet getting caught between the train and the platform.

Through this regulatory amendment, the city expects to secure mobility for transportation-vulnerable individuals, enhance evacuation safety in emergencies, and increase public trust. In particular, it is anticipated that this will further strengthen Gwangju’s image as a "human rights-centered city."

Oh Younggeol, Director of the Urban Railway Construction Headquarters, emphasized, "Urban railways must be safe and convenient for all citizens to use. This amendment reflects our commitment to protecting transportation-vulnerable individuals and respecting human rights, and we will continue to do our utmost to build citizen-centered transportation infrastructure."
