Refuting Professor Gyeho Lee's Claims on "You Quiz"
"Unnecessary Fear... Correction Is Needed"
Dr. Heewon Jung, who has led the "slow aging" trend and currently serves as the Chief Health Officer of Seoul, is drawing attention for refuting the health-related claims made by Professor Gyeho Lee, an emeritus professor at Chungnam National University, during his appearance on the tvN variety show "You Quiz on the Block."
On the 10th, Dr. Jung posted a message on her YouTube channel community, stating, "Recently, a broadcast introduced claims such as 'drinking a lot of water can cause your heart's electrical activity to stop, leading to death,' 'eating a lot of vegetables and fruits can cause hyponatremia,' and 'a low-sodium diet is actually dangerous.' These statements have attracted significant attention but also seem to have caused confusion among many people."
She continued, "I, too, have been receiving a great number of questions from people around me," and wrote, "Many of these claims are medically exaggerated or lack scientific evidence. Some could even create unnecessary fear about healthy eating habits, so I felt it was necessary to correct them."
She went on to announce, "At 9 p.m. on Monday the 11th, I will be hosting a live talk broadcast with Professor Sejoong Kim, a board member of the Korean Society of Nephrology and a nephrologist at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, to discuss these topics. I hope many people will tune in."
Previously, on the episode of tvN's "You Quiz" aired on the 6th, Gyeho Lee, an analytical chemist who has spent 25 years tracking harmful substances in food and is an emeritus professor at Chungnam National University, was invited for an interview on the topic "Misconceptions and Truths about Korean Dietary Habits."
On the show, Professor Lee warned, "If you make sure to drink 2 liters of water every day, your health can deteriorate. There are people whose health worsens because they don't drink water, and there are people whose health worsens because they do." He also said, "Some people eat excessive amounts of vegetables and fruits or go to extremes with low-sodium diets. In such cases, you could die suddenly at night from cardiac arrest caused by hyponatremia."
Meanwhile, Dr. Jung was appointed as the first Chief Health Officer of Seoul on the 1st. The Chief Health Officer is a civilian expert position introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to incorporate a health perspective into all policies. The role involves providing advice and proposing policy ideas during the formulation and implementation of city policies from the perspective of "citizen health." The term lasts for two years.
