Controversy Over Reuse of Leftover Side Dishes at Yeosu Restaurant On the 7th, Yeosu City held a countermeasure meeting to resolve issues following repeated complaints about rudeness and unsanitary conditions in food and lodging businesses. Provided by Yeosu City

A report was filed alleging that a restaurant in Gyodong, Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province, reused leftover side dishes from customers, once again bringing the issue of unsanitary practices in local restaurants into the spotlight.

This incident is particularly noteworthy because it occurred just one day after a self-purification resolution was adopted, promising improvements in hygiene and service in response to a series of recent reports about rudeness and unsanitary conditions in food and lodging establishments. As a result, there are growing calls for the authorities to take more proactive measures.

According to Yeosu City officials and the informant on August 9, the previous day during lunchtime, an employee at an eel soup specialty restaurant in Gyodong was seen pouring leftovers back into a side dish container. The scene was captured on camera and reported to the relevant authorities.

The informant stated, "I was shocked when I happened to witness this scene," and added, "It made me seriously question whether Yeosu City truly deserves its reputation as a leading tourist destination on the southern coast."

The Food Sanitation Act clearly prohibits food service businesses from re-cooking, re-serving, or storing leftovers, making such actions a clear violation of the law. Upon receiving the report, Yeosu City announced that it would take strict action, including immediate administrative measures against the establishment if any violations are confirmed through on-site inspections.

A city official emphasized, "This incident, which occurred ahead of the 2026 Island Expo, is of particular concern as it could seriously damage the region's tourism image. If any violations of hygiene standards are confirmed at the establishment, we will take legal action, and we will thoroughly strengthen hygiene management and service improvements in all local businesses moving forward."
